Director of Education
The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier seeks a Director of Education to develop and supervise educational programs in both the NYS licensed preschool and museum environments. In this role, you will be responsible for excellence in the educational offerings of The Discovery Center, the premier local children’s museum and hands-on learning center in the Binghamton area.
Daily operational responsibilities include supervision of education programs and staff including museum-based, school age museum-to-you, and pre-school programs, after school, summer camps, etc. In this role, you will interview, hire, train, schedule and support staff members, ensuring they meet all policies, legal requirements, and professional development requirements.
In addition to overseeing daily operations, you will supervise financial management of the school programs and compliance with the NYS Office of Children and Family Services regulations and NYS Learning Standards, and maintain and submit appropriate paperwork in accordance with CACFP (The Child and Adult Care Food Program).
Annual responsibilities include oversight of curriculum development for preschool and museum-to-you programs, curriculum development for summer camps, recruitment for all educational programs, and implementation of registration process.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in curriculum/program development and strong organizational and leadership skills. Excellent public speaking and writing skills are essential as you will be the primary liaison between The Discovery Center and students’ parents.
• Bachelor’s degree in child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation or a related field
• 5+ years of teaching experience
• Excellent writing and public speaking skills
• Master’s degree in Education or related field
• 10+ years of teaching experience
• 2+ years of administrative experience
• Experience creating and launching new education programs
• 40 hours/week, nonexempt

Executive Director, The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier, Binghamton, New York
The Discovery Center has celebrated 35 years and is looking toward the future! We are seeking an Executive Director (ED) to support current strategic initiatives, while demonstrating the
courage, imagination and ambition necessary to grow the Center!
The ED ensures the success of educational programs (pre-school, after school, summer camps, etc), museum exhibits, special events, marketing and public relations. In addition to overseeing daily operations, the ED will support fundraising, grant writing, facility management and the
overall financial management of the Center.
The ED reports to and collaborates with the Board of Directors.
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Management, Business Administration or related field
5+ years of professional experience
Excellent writing and public speaking skills
Financial management experience (budgeting, basic accounting, reporting, etc)
Strong drive for community engagement
Master’s degree in Education, Museum Management, Business Administration or related field
10+ years of professional experience
Supervisory/Managerial experience of a staff greater than 10
Non-profit leadership experience
Experience creating and launching new programs
Grant writing and fundraising experience
Management of an operational non-profit budget in excess of $1M
Competitive and negotiable, based upon experience

Kids Club Teaching Assistant
The Discovery Center of the Southern Tier seeks a Teaching Assistant for our Kids Club After School Program, to assist in the implementation of educational programs in the classroom setting for school age children from 5 to 12 years old. In this role, you will assist the lead teacher of the program with lessons and provide oversight for the safety of the children.
The ideal candidate will be creative, have an ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and an understanding of issues that may arise with young children.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One year experience working with children less than 13 years of age
- Associate’s Degree or higher in an Education field
- 2+ years of experience in working with children
- Days to be determined, 2:45PM-6:15PM during the school year (September-June) with breaks for holidays. Additional hours may be available.
- This position is nonexempt and reports to the Director of Education
